Tell us your thoughts on the book. How did you feel while reading? Was there any special part of the book that was the most interesting to you? Talk about it!
Cole has recommended that Peter come to the island to soak in the pond, carry the ancestor rock, and maybe even see the Spirit Bear. Peter is very reluctant to come and after a month of being on the island he is finally speaking to Cole, even participating the soaks and rolling the rock. I think it is interesting that he is being mean to Cole by throwing a rock at him and also by pushing him in the stream. I think this my be Peters way of gaining power over someone who has filled him with so much fear. At the end of chapter 26 Peter finally invites Cole to join he and Garvey in the cabin. Will Peter be able to forgive Cole? Will Peter ever see the Spirit Bear? If so, what will have to happen between the boys before the Spirit Bear will reveal himself to them?
Irony was not lost on Cole. He began to make connections between the beating he gave Peter and the mauling he just received from the Spirit Bear. As a reader you should have easily been able to use the visualization reading strategy. The author Ben Mikaelsen did an amazing job making you not only see, but feel every part of the attack.
"Powerful jaws clamped harder, Cole felt his pelvis crack. " "Ragged and torn flesh" "A bloody white bone jutted out near his elbow like a broken stick." Cole knows that he only feels good when he is in control, and now that he is lying exposed unable to protect himself he is "living in his worst nightmare." Chapter 9 is the climax of the story. The climax is the dramatic moment when the tension reaches its peak and the conflict comes to a head. Ponyboy has just lost his best friend and Dallas lost the only person he ever cared about. There is no coming back from this event, the main character (Ponyboy) is changed forever. Everyone in the gang feels the same way about the loss of their friend. Even Two-Bit said that he wished it was "anyone of us, anyone but Johnny!"
The first three chapters have come and gone. We have met the whole gang and now realize that social issues have been going on for a long time. It always seems that no one is ever satisfied with who they are, or what they have. Too many people think the grass is greener on the other side.
